Abstract:
The United States is divided and sub-divided into successively smaller hydrologic units, which are initially classified into four levels: regions, sub-regions, accounting units, and cataloging units. The hydrologic units are arranged within each other, from the smallest(cataloging units) to the largest (regions). Each hydrologic unit is identified by a unique hydrologic unit code (HUC) consisting of two to eight digits based on the four levels of classification in the hydrologic unit system (USGS, 2003a). The region represented by a HUC of level 2 is larger than a cataloging unit (HUC8). The numbering system for the hydrologic units fully describes the nested nature of the HUC system. The HUC8 level is also called the sub-basin level (Legleiter, 2001). Some years ago, USGS and Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) developed two further even more highly resolved watershed classifications known as watersheds (HUC11) and sub-watersheds (HUC14). However, USGS is currently in the process of developing a nationally consistent hydrologic unit dataset for the delineation of watersheds and sub-watersheds at the 10-digit and 12-digit scales and these follow the format of the HUC2 to HUC8 nested system.

HUC10 watersheds are equivalent in scale to those previously designated as HUC11, and HUC12 units are similar to those previously given the HUC14 descriptor.

This data set compiles the 11 digit or 8 digit Hydrologic Cataloging Unit (HUC) for 37 states in the eastern and mid-western United States into one spatial data set. It was compiled in 2004 from the individual state 11 digit or 8 digit HUC available at that time. Processing occured during the compilation process. Please read the data processing steps of this metadata document for further information.
Purpose:
The data set was compiled in order to provide a stop-gap measure before the official edge -matched 10 digit HUCS are available. The HUCS were stitched together to provide a continous data layer of best available data.

For use with the GEOSTAC database, this data set was compiled in order to simplify pesticide risk assesment and to provide a common data set for interested parties.
Supplemental_Information:
Please visit: http://www.ncgc.nrcs.usda.gov/products/datasets/watershed/, for more information on the offical Watershed Boundary Dataset compilation process.

Access_Constraints: This data set is intended for use with the GEOSTAC database.
Use_Constraints:
The use constraints on this data set are particularly important. This data set was compiled as a stop-gap measure prior to official release of the edge matched HUC watershed boundary data sets. Users should be aware that the USDA, NRCS are currently managing the production of an offical country wide watershed boundary data set. More information is available at: http://www.ncgc.nrcs.usda.gov/products/datasets/watershed/. In addition, user should be aware of the compilation process of this data set. Please refer to the data processing portion of this metadata document for further information.

Process_Description:
Watershed (HUC10/11) were only available from individual states, and this resulted in potential complications at state boundaries. To create a continuous, consistent scale watershed spatial dataset, the aggregated and native HUC10/11 datasets (and national HUC8 where necessary) were joined across state boundaries to provide a continuous HUC coverage for data processing and analysis of the 37 states. The following general rules were used to create a continuous 37 state watershed coverage from individual state coverages:

• For HUC10/11 watersheds in states bordering those outside of the 37 state extents, watersheds that crossed state borders were excluded.

• For HUC8 sub-basins that crossed borders outside of the 37 state extents, the subbasin was included if the flow drained into one of the 37 states.

• In cases where there were only national HUC8 data available for a state, national HUC8 sub-basins were used in the interior of the state.

• HUC10/11 watersheds were aggregated to the HUC8 level, using the same procedure as above, to match the sub-basin scale for continuity across state borders (e.g., Nebraska and Oklahoma border in Figure 9).

• HUC 12/14 watersheds were aggregated to the HUC 11 level using the dissolve function in ArcGIS on the HUC 8 attribute field.
