SAMSON weather station bounded by Major Land Resource Areas and Land Resource Regions.
SAMSON weather stations are assigned Major Land Resource Area (MLRA) sub-polygons based upon vertical elevation considerations. In those areas where MLRAs do not exist, SAMSON weather stations are assigned to Land Resource Region (LRR) sub-polygons. The weather stations were overlaid with the MLRAs or LLRs and a Euclidian distance assignment algorithm is used to generate "territories" for each weather station. The territories assigned by the Euclidian distance assignment algorithm are constrained by the MLRA or LLR boundaries.

This data set is intended for use with the GeoStac Database. Use limitations are directly determined by the input data sets. The source data sets, MLRA and LLR Boundaries, are designed for national, regional and state level analysis and may not be appropriate for use at larger scales. The source MLRA and LLR boundaries do not meet National Map Accuracy Standards.

The Major Land Resource Area (MLRA) boundaries for the conterminous United States compiled by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), and last updated in 2002. SAMSON Weather Station points were derived from the latitude and longitude coordinates for each station as provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Adminstration and the National Weather Service. http://www.epa.gov/ceampubl/tools/metdata/index.htm
To produce the SAMSON weather station polygons bounded by MLRAs and LLRs, SAMSON points were overlaid with MLRA and LLR polygons and a Euclidian distance assignment algorithm was used to generate "territories" for each weather station. The territories assigned by the Euclidian distance assignment algorithm were constrained by the MLRA or LLR boundaries. This was accomplished by: a) creating a 1x1k raster grid for entire MLRA and LLR data sets, b) identifying nearest SAMSON station to each grid point using the Arc command, NEAR, c) creating regions based on points identified as be assigned to the same SAMSON station.
The MLRA and LLR bounded WBAN stations data sets were combined using the Arc Geoprocessing Tool, Union.
Import data set into ArcGeodatabase.
Project data set to Albers Equal Area and NAD 83 datum.
Aggregate data based on all non-ArcMap automatically generated fields using the Geoprocessing Tool, DISSOLVE, in order reduce duplicate data.
