STATSGO ABSTRACT: This data set is a digital general soil association map developed by the National Cooperative Soil Survey. It consists of a broad based inventory of soils and nonsoil areas that occur in a repeatable pattern on the landscape and that can be cartographically shown at the scale mapped. The soil maps for STATSGO are compiled by generalizing more detailed soil survey maps. Where more detailed soil survey maps are not available, data on geology, topography, vegetation, and climate are assembled, together with Land Remote Sensing Satellite (LANDSAT) images. Soils of like areas are studied, and the probable classification and extent of the soils are determined. SAMSON ABSTRACT: Solar and Meteorological Surface Observation Network 1961-1990 (SAMSON) (NOAA) -- SAMSON is a compilation of National Renewable Energy Laboratory solar data and National Weather service hourly surface observations for the period 1961-1990. This tabular data set consists of STATSGO MUID and 237 SAMSON Weather Stations units. STATSGO soil polygons are assigned to the most appropriate SAMSON weather station for modeling purposes.
For use with the GEOSTAC database, this data set was compiled in order to simplify presticide risk assessment and to provide a common data set upon which to perform analysis for all stakeholders. STATSGO soil polygons are assigned to the most appropriate SAMSON weather station for modeling purposes.
The original source STATSGO dataset is available on an individual state basis from the following web site: http://www.essc.psu.edu/soil_info/index.cgi?soil_data&statsgo. The Earth System Science Center in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences at The Pennsylvania State University has compiled and updated the USDA NRCS STATSGO spatial and tabular data. The original source SAMSON Weather Station points were genereted from the known station locations (Latitude and Longitude) and known Station Identification Units (WBAN).

Compile: 1) SAMSON weather station points,
2) STATSGO MUID polygon boundaries,
3) MLRA polygon boundaries,
4) LLR polygon boundaries,
ArcINFO Coverage file format for use as the input data sets necessary for assigning SAMSON weather stations to STATSGO MUIDs.
Project input data sets to Albers Equal Area and NAD 83 datum.
MLRA Constrained Assignments: A) Create a 1 x 1 km raster grid for MLRA covering continental US, B) Identify nearest SAMSON station to each grid point (ARC command NEAR), C) Create MLRA weather regions based on points identified with the same SAMSON station. Once the MLRA weather regions are determined: D) Assign a weather station to each STATSGO MUID using STATSGO centroid data set, E) Intersect the STASGO centroid with the MLRA SAMSON weather territory, F) Assign STATSGO polygons to weather stations. For those polyons with multiple centroids, the polygon with the largest area is assigned the weather station. LLR Constrained Assignments: Follow the same methodology for the remaining weather stations, those falling outside of MLRA boundaries, using LLR boundaries: A) Create a 1 x 1 km raster grid for LLR covering continental US, B) Identify nearest SAMSON station to each grid point (ARC command NEAR), C) Create LLR weather regions based on points identified with the same SAMSON station. Once the LLR weather regions are determined: D) Assign a weather station to each STATSGO MUID using STATSGO centroid data set, E) Intersect the STASGO centroid with the LLR SAMSON weather territory, F) Assign STATSGO polygons to weather stations. For those polyons with multiple centroids, the polygon with the largest area is assigned the weather station.
