Vector Spatial Datasets

Administrative and Infrastructure Boundaries

  1. Agriculture Census Districts: This data set is the spatial representation of the Agriculture Statistical Districts, also called Crop Reporting Districts, as delineated in the 2002 Census of Agriculture by the National Agricultural Statistics Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture.
  2. Cities: This map layer includes cities in the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.These cities were collected from the 1970 National Atlas of the United States.
  3. County Boundaries: This data set portrays the state and county boundaries of the US.The data set was created by extracting county polygon features from the individual 1:2,000,000-scale County boundary Digital Line Graph (DLG) files produced by the U.S. Geological Survey.
  4. Federal Lands: This map layer consists of federally owned or administered lands of the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
  5. Roads: This data set portrays the major roads in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
  6. State Boundaries This data set portrays the State boundaries of the United States of America. The data set was created by extracting the State boundary polygons from the individual 1:2,000,000-scale State boundary Digital Line Graph (DLG) files produced by the U.S. Geological Survey.
  7. Urban Areas This data set includes a selection of urban areas in the United States derived from the urban areas layer of the Digital Chart of the World (DCW).
  8. Wilderness Areas This map layer consists of National Wilderness Preservation System areas of 640 acres or more, in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
  9. Zip Codes This data set is a U.S. continental level compilation of The U.S. Census Bureau's 2000 5-Digit ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs).

Enhanced River Reach File (ERF_1v2) Datasets

  1. ERF_1v2 Watersheds: ERF1v2 watersheds were originally created by USGS, based on U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's River Reach File 1 (RF1). These watersheds are a consistent national layer of drainage areas corresponding to RF1 segments. The digital segmented network based on watershed boundaries, ERF1_2, includes enhancements to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's River Reach File 1 (RF1) (USEPA, 1996; DeWald and others, 1985) to support national and regional-scale surface water-quality modeling.
  2. ERF_1v2 Watershed Metrics: This dataset contains an analysis of agriculturally relevant watershed characteristics for the ERF_1v2 watersheds.
  3. ERF_1v2 Agricultural Margins: This dataset represents a nation-wide assessment of proximity of agricultural fields to water bodies summarized by ERF_1v2 watersheds. The National Agricultural Statistics Service, 2002 Census of Agriculture was used to estimate the amount of individual crops grown within the surface water margins, and within each watershed.
  4. ERF_1v2 Corn Margins: This dataset represents a nation-wide assessment of proximity of agricultural fields in corn to water bodies summarized by ERF_1v2 watersheds. The National Agricultural Statistics Service, 2002 Census of Agriculture was used to estimate the amount of corn grown within the surface water margins, and within each watershed.
  5. ERF_1v2 Cotton Margins: This dataset represents a nation-wide assessment of proximity of agricultural fields in cotton to water bodies summarized by ERF_1v2 watersheds. The National Agricultural Statistics Service, 2002 Census of Agriculture was used to estimate the amount of cotton grown within the surface water margins, and within each watershed.
  6. STATSGO ERF_1v2 County Intersect: This data set is a compilation of STATSGO soils, ERF1 (Version 1.2) watersheds, and County jurisdictional boundaries. The polygons of this compilation are attributed with characteristics from each of three input data sets.

Watershed Boundaries (HUCs)

  1. Watershed Boundaries for the United States: 8-digit hydrologic unit boundaries for the continental United States
  2. Detailed Watershed boundaries for the Midwest and Eastern United States: This data set compiles the 11 digit or 8 digit Hydrologic Cataloging Unit (HUC) for 37 states in the eastern and mid-western United States into one spatial data set.
  3. Detailed Watershed Boundaries for Individual States: 12-digit and 14-digit hydrologic unit boundaries for the following states were collected: AL, CA, CT, GA, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, NC, NH, NJ, NY, OH, SC, TN, UT, VA, VT, WA, WV, WY.

Natural Resources

  1. National Hydrography Dataset (NHD): The National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) is a feature-based database that interconnects and uniquely identifies the stream segments or reaches that comprise the nation's surface water drainage system. Medium resolution NHD data was collected for all of the lower 48 states.
  2. Ecological Regions: This map layer is commonly called Bailey's ecoregions and shows ecosystems of regional extent in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
  3. Land Resource Regions: This coverage contains the Land Resource Regions (LRR) boundaries for the conterminous United States. LRR boundaries were derived from the Major Land Resource Area (MLRA) boundaries for the conterminous United States compiled by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), and last updated in 2002.
  4. Major Land Resource Areas: This coverage contains the Major Land Resource Area (MLRA) boundaries for the conterminous United States. MLRA boundaries were last updated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), formerly the Soil Conservation Service (SCS), in 2002.
  5. NAWQA Cycle 1 Boundaries: This is coverage of the boundaries and codes used for the U.S. Geological Survey's National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program Study-Unit investigations in the conterminous United States, excluding the High Plains Regional Ground-Water Study. The data set represents the areas studied during the first decade of the NAWQA Program, from 1991-2001 ("cycle 1").
  6. NAWQA Cycle 2 Boundaries: This is coverage of the boundaries and codes used for the U.S. Geological Survey's National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program Study-Unit investigations in the conterminous United States, excluding the High Plains Regional Ground-Water Study. The data set represents the areas studied during the first decade of the NAWQA Program, from 2001-2012 ("cycle 2").
  7. Natural Resources Inventory Polygons: Exact locations of NRI sampling points are not publicly available, but they are identified according to presence in a county, MLRA, and hydrologic unit area. This data layer combines those three data sets, as well as Federal Lands, to produce spatial representation for NRI results.
  8. USGS Surface Water Gages: This dataset represents the spatial location of USGS surface water gauge sites collecting flow and levels in streams, lakes, and springs in all states.
  9. NRI STATSGO Polygon Intersection. This dataset represents the intersection of Natural Resources Inventory polygons and STATSGO polygons. This dataset allows for complex analysis or spatial datasets for pesticide risk assessment.
  10. STATSGO Soils Polygons: This data set is a digital general soil association map developed by the National Cooperative Soil Survey. It consists of a broad based inventory of soils and non--soil areas that occur in a repeatable pattern on the landscape and that can be cartographically shown at the scale mapped.

Weather

  1. SAMSON Weather Station Points: Solar and Meteorological Surface Observation Network 1961-1990 (SAMSON) (NOAA) -- SAMSON is a compilation of National Renewable Energy Laboratory solar data and National Weather service hourly surface observations for the period 1961-1990. This data set consist of the latitude and longitude of the 237 SAMSON Weather Station vectorized in point format and assoicated Weather Station identification units.
  2. SAMSON Polygons: This dataset contains SAMSON weather station bounded by Major Land Resource Areas and Land Resource Regions.
  3. STATSGO – SAMSON Association Table: This tabular data set consists of STATSGO MUID and 237 SAMSON Weather Stations units. STATSGO soil polygons are assigned to the most appropriate SAMSON weather station for modeling purposes.

303(d) Clean Water Act Datasets

  1. 303(d) Listed River Segments: This dataset represents NHD reaches which have an associated Clean Water Act 303(d) listing.
  2. 303(d) Listed Points: This dataset represents points along NHD reaches associated with Clean Water Act 303(d) listed water bodies. Point events are attached to a reach in NHD to represent a TMDL for many reasons, including to represent an estuary, to represent a shellfish area. Point events represent point source dischargers, or, if there is no reach in NHD, they are used to represent the TMDL.
  3. 303(d) Listed Polygons: This dataset represents NHD water body polygons and the associated NHD reach that have an associated Clean Water Act 303(d) listing.

Raster Spatial Datasets

Land Cover

  1. 2004 Cropland Data Layer: This datasets is a raster, geo-referenced, categorized land cover data layer produced using satellite imagery from the Thematic Mapper (TM) instrument on Landsat 5 and the Indiana Remote Sensing (IRS) Advanced Wide Field Sensor (AWiFS). The data layer is aggregated up to 16 standardized categories for display purposes with the emphasis being agricultural land cover. This dataset was collected for the following states: AR, IA, IL, IN, MO, MS, ND, WI.
  2. National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD) for Individual States: This dataset represents a nationally consistent land cover data set for the entire conterminous United States.These data can be used as a layer in a geographic information system (GIS) for any number of purposes such assessing wildlife habitat, water quality and pesticide runoff, land use change, etc. The data has been collected for the lower 48 states.
  3. Nationwide National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD) for Single Land Classes: This dataset represents national layers of single NLCD land classifications (e.g., “Row Crop”). These data layers have been developed for all 21 NLCD classifications and are useful in national assessment in pesticide risk assessment.

Weather

  1. PRISM Normal Annual Precipitation: This data set contains spatially gridded precipitation of average annual precipitation for the climatological period 1971-2000. Distribution of the point measurements to a spatial grid was accomplished using the PRISM model, developed by Chris Daly of SCAS/OSU.

Soils

  1. Available Water Capacity: This dataset contains the available water capacity (AWC) in the top 100, 150, and 250 cm of soil, derived from the State Soil Geographic (STATSGO) soils data compiled by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
  2. Bulk Density: This dataset was created by computing the mean bulk density for each layer of each component of each STATSGO map unit, and interpolating the results to a set of 11 standard layers.
  3. Dominant Rock Fragment: This dataset contains the dominant rock fragment class for each of 11 standard soil layers for the 48 conterminous states derived from the State Soil Geographic (STATSGO) soils data compiled by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
  4. Dominant Soil Texture: This dataset was created by determining the dominant standard soil texture class for each standard layer of each map unit for each of the 48 conterminous states (mapunits for the District of Columbia are included under Maryland), and then joining the results for the 48 states into a single dataset.
  5. Soil Texture Fractions: This dataset contains the percent of sand, silt, and clay in the soil material which passes a No. 10 (2 mm) sieve for each of 11 standard soil layers for the 48 conterminous states.
  6. Hydrologic Soils Group Percent: This dataset contains the percent of each mapunit which is in each of the hydrologic soil group (HSG) classes, as reported in the State Soil Geographic (STATSGO) soils data compiled by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
  7. KFactor: The K-factor is used in the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE)and represents a relative index of susceptibility of bare, cultivated soil to particle detachment and transport by rainfall.
  8. Map Unit: This dataset contains information specifying the 10,500 mapunits defined for the 48 conterminous states for the State Soil Geographic (STATSGO) soils data compiled by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) of the USDA.
  9. Permeability: The mean permeability rate was determined for each of 11 standard layers for each map unit of each state using data from the STATSGO Comp and Layer tables.
  10. Soil pH: The mean pH was determined for each of 11 standard layers for each map unit of each state using data from the STATSGO Comp and Layer tables.
  11. Plasticity: The mean plasticity index was determined for each of 11 standard layers for each map unit of each state using data from the STATSGO Comp and Layer tables.
  12. Porosity: This dataset contains the mean porosity for each of 11 standard soil layers for the 48 conterminous states derived from the State Soil Geographic (STATSGO) soils data compiled by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
  13. Depth to Bedrock: This dataset contains the mean depth to bedrock derived from the State Soil Geographic (STATSGO) soils data compiled by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
  14. Rock Volume: This dataset contains the mean volumetric percent of rock for each of 11 standard soil layers for the 48 conterminous states derived from the State Soil Geographic (STATSGO) soils data compiled by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Other Datasets

  1. ERF_1v2 Watersheds: This dataset contains a raster representation of the ERF1v2 watersheds. These watersheds are a consistent national layer of drainage areas corresponding to RF1 segments.
  2. Hydrologic Landscape Regions: Hydrologic landscape regions (HLRs) in the United States were delineated by using geographic information system (GIS) tools and statistical methods including principal components and cluster analyses. The GIS and statistical analyses were applied to land-surface form, geologic texture (permeability of the soil and bedrock), and climate variables that describe the physical and climatic setting of 43,931 small (roughly 200 square kilometers) watersheds in the United States.

The NRI is conducted by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), in cooperation with the Iowa State University (ISU) Statistical Laboratory.
  4. 1997 NRI Soils: This database contains U. S. Department of Agriculture's Soil Conservation Service’s extensive Soil Interpretations Records that may be linked to the points in the NRI database.
  5. 1997 NCFAP Pesticide Use: The National Center for Food and Agricultural Policy (NCFAP) National Pesticide Use Database was issued in 1995 to provide comprehensive national and state level pesticide use data, circa 1992. In 2000, NCFAP released an update to the National Pesticide Use Database providing data circa 1997.
  6. STATSGO Tabular: This database contains the all tabular data associated with The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) STATSGO data base. This soils database was designed for regional, multi-state, river basin, state, and multi-county resource planning, management, and monitoring.
  7. Proximity of Water to NLCD Agriculture: This database represents a nation-wide assessment of proximity of agricultural fields to water bodies summarized by watersheds.
